Understanding Your Concern
What Actually Happens to the Ink
Tattoo ink sits in the dermis, below the layer of skin that renews itself. That is why tattoos are permanent — the particles are too large for the body’s immune system to carry away, so they stay where the needle put them.
Q-switched laser works by delivering energy in extremely short, high-intensity pulses. The ink absorbs that energy and shatters into fragments small enough for the immune system to clear gradually over the following weeks. The laser passes through the surrounding skin without targeting it, which is why the tattoo fades while the skin around it stays intact.
How well any tattoo responds depends on factors that were decided long before you walked in. Black and dark blue ink clears most readily. Greens and light blues are more stubborn. Reds vary. Yellows, whites and some fluorescent pigments respond poorly or not at all. Amateur and stick-and-poke work usually clears faster than professional work because the ink is less densely packed and sits at a shallower depth. Older tattoos have already faded naturally and tend to need fewer sessions than recent ones.
None of that is visible from a photograph, which is why the assessment happens in person.
Our Treatment
Removal on the Alma Harmony XL Pro
Treatments are carried out on the Alma Harmony XL Pro, a medical-grade platform with Q-switched capability suitable for a range of ink colours and skin tones.
Consultation and patch test. Your tattoo is assessed in person — the ink colours, density, age, depth, its position on the body and the condition of the surrounding skin. A patch test is carried out to confirm the correct settings and to see how your skin responds before a course begins. You will be given a session estimate at this point, and if your tattoo is unlikely to clear completely you will be told that rather than sold a course on optimistic figures.
During the session. Most men describe the sensation as hot elastic band snaps in rapid succession — sharper than getting the tattoo but over much faster. A small tattoo takes a few minutes; a larger piece takes longer. The treated area typically goes white for a few minutes afterwards, which is a normal and expected reaction as the energy is absorbed.
Spacing. Sessions are spaced six to eight weeks apart. That gap is not negotiable padding — the immune system needs that time to clear the fragmented ink, and treating too soon achieves nothing while increasing the risk to the skin.
Downtime & Results
Aftercare and Realistic Results
Immediately after treatment the area will be red, raised and warm, and may blister over the following day or two. Blistering is a normal part of the process and not a sign anything has gone wrong. Do not pick or burst blisters — let them settle on their own. Keep the area clean, dry and covered for the first 24 hours.
Avoid the gym, swimming, saunas and hot showers for 48 hours, and keep the area out of the sun entirely between sessions. Sun exposure on treated skin is the most common cause of pigment changes, and a high SPF is essential on any area that cannot be covered.
Session numbers. A professional black-ink tattoo typically needs six to twelve sessions for substantial clearance, and heavily saturated or multicoloured work can need more. Fading for a cover-up usually needs considerably fewer — often three to five — because you are lightening the ink rather than clearing it.
Complete removal cannot be guaranteed on any tattoo. Some pigments do not respond, and a faint shadow or slight textural change sometimes remains where dense ink has been cleared. You will get an honest view of the likely end result at consultation, before any money is spent.
“Tattoo removal takes longer than most people expect and no clinic can promise a blank canvas. What you will get here is a realistic session estimate up front and an honest answer about whether full clearance is achievable on your ink.”
Suitability
Who Is This Treatment Suitable For?
Suitability and likely response are assessed at consultation, along with a patch test. Recent tattoos need to be fully healed — at least six to eight weeks old — before any removal work begins. Commonly treated:
- Black and dark blue ink
- Amateur and stick-and-poke work
- Older, naturally faded tattoos
- Fading ahead of a cover-up
- Names and lettering
- Hand, neck and forearm pieces
- Partial removal of a larger piece
- Previously treated tattoos

Frequently Asked Questions
A professional black-ink tattoo typically needs six to twelve sessions, sometimes more for heavily saturated or multicoloured work. Fading for a cover-up usually needs three to five. Amateur tattoos often clear faster. You will be given an estimate at consultation based on your actual tattoo rather than an average.
Most men describe it as hot elastic band snaps in quick succession — sharper than getting the tattoo, but over far more quickly. A small piece takes only a few minutes. Cooling is used to make the session more comfortable.
Not always, and no honest clinic will guarantee it. Black and dark blue ink clears well; greens, light blues and yellows are far more stubborn, and some pigments do not respond at all. A faint shadow or slight textural change occasionally remains. You will get a realistic view of the likely end result before starting.
Six to eight weeks is how long your immune system needs to clear the ink fragments broken up by the previous session. Treating sooner does not speed anything up — the ink has not been cleared yet — and it increases the risk of skin damage.
Yes. Blistering in the day or two after treatment is a normal part of the process. Do not pick or burst them. Keep the area clean, dry and covered for the first 24 hours and let them settle naturally.
Yes, and it is one of the most common reasons men come in. Fading needs far fewer sessions than full removal because you are lightening the ink enough for your artist to work over it. Bring your artist’s requirements to consultation if you have them.
Not for 48 hours — no gym, swimming, saunas or hot showers. Sweat and friction on a freshly treated area, particularly one that has blistered, is what causes problems.
Laser tattoo removal does not usually cause scarring when aftercare is followed properly. Picking blisters is the main cause of scarring, as is sun exposure between sessions. If the tattoo itself was applied badly and already has scar tissue, that will still be there once the ink has gone.
