Understanding Your Concern
Why Men's Hair Is Treated Differently
Male body hair is coarser, denser and more deeply rooted than female hair, and it grows across much larger areas. A man’s back can carry several times the follicle density of the areas most commonly treated on women, which changes almost everything about how the treatment is planned — the energy settings used, how long a session takes, and how many sessions a full course realistically needs.
The reasons men come in vary. Some want to stop shaving areas they cannot reach properly. Some are dealing with ingrown hairs and razor bumps on the neck and jawline, a problem that recurs indefinitely with shaving because the hair keeps growing back into the skin. Others want a cleaner neckline or a defined beard edge without a weekly trim, or are clearing an area before laser tattoo removal or a sporting season.
Laser targets the pigment in the hair follicle and disables its ability to regrow. It works best on hair that is actively growing, and because follicles cycle through growth and rest independently of one another, no single session catches all of them. That is why a course is needed rather than a one-off appointment — and why anyone promising permanent removal in two visits is not being straight with you.
Our Treatment
Laser Hair Removal on the Alma Harmony XL Pro
Treatments are carried out on the Alma Harmony XL Pro, a medical-grade platform with settings suitable across a wide range of skin tones and hair types — including the coarse, dense growth typical on a male back or chest.
Before your first session. A patch test is carried out at consultation to confirm the right parameters for your skin and to check how you respond. This is not optional and it is not a formality. The area needs to be shaved closely the day before or the morning of treatment, and you must not wax, pluck or use hair removal cream for four weeks beforehand — those methods remove the follicle root the laser needs to find.
During the session. Cooling is applied throughout and most men describe the sensation as a hot elastic band flicked against the skin. Larger areas take longer: a full back is typically 45 minutes to an hour, a neckline or beard line closer to 15 minutes. Eye protection is worn for the whole treatment.
Building a course. Sessions are spaced four to six weeks apart on the face and neck, and six to eight weeks apart on the body, timed around the growth cycle of the area being treated.
Downtime & Results
What to Expect Afterwards
Redness and slight swelling around the follicles is normal and usually settles within a few hours, though it can last a day on denser areas like the back. There is no dressing and nothing to hide — most men return to work straight from the appointment.
For 48 hours afterwards, avoid the gym, saunas, steam rooms, hot showers and swimming pools. Heat and sweat on freshly treated skin is the most common cause of irritation. Sun exposure on the treated area should be avoided throughout the course, and SPF used on anywhere uncovered.
Around one to three weeks after each session, treated hairs begin to shed. It can look like regrowth — it is not. The hairs are being pushed out as the follicle sheds them, and gently exfoliating helps the process along.
Most men see meaningful thinning after three or four sessions, with a typical course running to six to eight sessions. Coarse hair on the back and chest often needs the upper end of that range, and hormonal factors mean some men benefit from an occasional maintenance session once the course is complete. The correct term is permanent hair reduction rather than removal, and that is how results are described at consultation.
“Laser hair removal on coarse male hair takes more sessions than the marketing usually suggests. You will be given a realistic number at consultation, along with an honest view on whether the area is worth treating at all.”
Suitability
Who Is This Treatment Suitable For?
Laser hair removal is suitable for most men, though the results depend heavily on hair colour: the laser targets pigment, so dark hair responds well while grey, white, red and very fine blond hair responds poorly or not at all. That will be assessed honestly at consultation. Commonly treated areas include:
- Full back and shoulders
- Chest and stomach
- Neckline and beard line shaping
- Ingrown hairs and razor bumps
- Underarms
- Arms and hands
- Legs
- Intimate areas
- Ears and nose (outer)
- Between the eyebrows

Your Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
Most men need six to eight sessions for a full course, spaced four to eight weeks apart depending on the area. Coarse hair on the back and chest often sits at the upper end. You will be given a realistic estimate at consultation based on your hair type, colour and density rather than a standard figure.
Most men describe it as a hot elastic band flicked against the skin. Cooling is applied throughout, which takes the edge off considerably. Bonier areas and the neck tend to be more sensitive than the back or chest. It is uncomfortable rather than painful, and each pulse lasts a fraction of a second.
Yes. Shave the area closely the day before or on the morning of your appointment. The laser needs to target the follicle beneath the skin, and surface hair absorbs energy that should be reaching the root. Do not wax, pluck, thread or use hair removal cream for four weeks before treatment.
The Alma Harmony XL Pro has settings suitable across a wide range of skin tones. A patch test is carried out before any course begins to confirm the correct parameters for your skin and check how it responds. Hair colour matters more than skin tone — grey, white and very fair hair does not respond because there is no pigment for the laser to target.
Not for 48 hours. Avoid the gym, saunas, steam rooms, hot showers and swimming. Heat and sweat on freshly treated skin is the most common cause of irritation afterwards. Plan sessions around your training week rather than the other way round.
The correct term is permanent hair reduction. Treated follicles are permanently disabled, but hormonal changes can activate dormant follicles over time, so some men have an occasional maintenance session once their course is complete. Anyone guaranteeing total permanent removal is overselling it.
Yes — shaping the neckline and beard edge is one of the most common requests. It is worth being certain about the shape you want, because the reduction is long-term. We will discuss where the line should sit before any treatment is carried out.
Usually, yes. Ingrown hairs and razor bumps on the neck are caused by hair curling back into the skin as it regrows after shaving. Reducing the hair reduces the problem at its source, and many men find this the single biggest benefit of a course.
