What Happens to Your Skin After Weight Loss?
Losing a significant amount of weight changes more than the number on the scales. Skin that has been stretched for months or years doesn’t always shrink back, the face can lose the fullness that kept it looking fresh, and muscle often disappears alongside the fat. Many people tell us they feel smaller but not firmer.
Post-weight loss skin is the term we use for all of these changes together. It affects people who have lost weight through diet and exercise, after bariatric surgery, and increasingly after GLP-1 weight loss injections, where weight tends to come off faster. Common concerns include:
- Loose or sagging skin on the tummy, arms, thighs, neck and under the chin
- Crepey, thin-looking skin with a crinkled texture
- Hollow cheeks, deeper nasolabial folds and a more tired-looking face
- Reduced muscle tone, so the body looks soft rather than defined
- Stretch marks that have become more visible as skin has thinned
At Serene Skin & Beauty in Sale, Laura and the team treat each of these with non-surgical options matched to the area and the cause. The sections below explain why it happens, what can help, and when surgery is the more honest answer.

Why Does Skin Become Loose After Weight Loss?
Skin is elastic, but only within limits. Its firmness depends on collagen and elastin fibres, and when skin is stretched for a long time those fibres weaken and lose their spring. When the weight comes off, the skin has less ability to retract. How much it recovers on its own depends on:
- How much weight you lost
- How quickly it came off
- How long the skin was stretched
- Age and natural collagen levels
- Sun damage, smoking and genetics

Skin Changes After GLP-1 Weight Loss Injections
GLP-1 weight loss injections, such as Mounjaro and Wegovy, have made significant weight loss achievable for many people. Because the weight often comes off over months rather than years, the skin has less time to adapt, and the changes can be more noticeable.
We tend to see three things in clients who have lost weight this way:
- Facial volume loss. Fat pads in the cheeks and temples shrink, which can make the face look hollow, older or drawn, sometimes called “Ozempic face”. See loss of facial volume.
- Loose body skin. Particularly on the tummy, upper arms, inner thighs and neck.
- Muscle loss. Rapid weight loss usually takes some muscle with it, so the body can look soft even at a lower weight. See muscle toning.
Being on a GLP-1 weight loss injection doesn’t usually stop you having skin or muscle treatments, but timing matters. We’ll ask about your medication and your weight loss so far at your free consultation, and advise when to start for the most lasting result.

How Post-Weight Loss Skin Treatments Work
Because post-weight loss skin is usually several problems at once, the best results come from treating each one rather than relying on a single machine.
Tightening loose skin. Exilis Ultra 360™ body skin tightening uses radiofrequency and ultrasound to heat the deeper layers of the skin and stimulate new collagen, so the skin gradually firms over the following weeks. On the face, neck and jawline, Exilis Ultra 360™ facial skin tightening does the same in smaller, more delicate areas. For lighter laxity on the body, ultrasound cavitation and radio frequency is a lower-cost option.
Rebuilding muscle. EMSCULPT® uses HIFEM energy to produce intense muscle contractions, rebuilding the tone that firm-looking skin depends on. HI-EMT / EMS sculpting is an alternative; our guide to EMSCULPT® vs HI-EMT explains the difference.
Restoring facial volume. Cheek fillers and nasolabial fold fillers replace lost volume, while skin boosters such as Profhilo® Structura improve skin quality and support from within.
Improving stretch marks. Exilis Ultra 360™ is usually our first recommendation for stretch marks after weight loss. Microneedling and laser stretch mark removal are alternatives. See stretch marks for more.
For most people, the combination of tightening and toning makes the biggest difference. Our Post-Weight Loss Tightening & Toning Package pairs Exilis Ultra 360™ with EMSCULPT® for exactly this reason.

Where Does Loose Skin Show After Weight Loss?
Face, neck and jawline
Volume loss in the cheeks, softening along the jawline and loose skin on the neck are often the first changes people notice. Exilis Ultra 360™ tightens, while fillers and skin boosters restore support. Read more in Turkey Neck: Can It Really Be Fixed Without Surgery? and Double Chin & Jawline Definition.
Tummy
The abdomen often has loose skin, residual fat and weakened core muscle together. A combination of Exilis Ultra 360™ and EMSCULPT® usually works best. See loose tummy skin after weight loss.
Upper arms
Crepey skin and reduced tone on the upper arms respond to skin tightening alongside muscle toning. Our complete guide to bingo wings and crepey arms compares the options, or see bingo wings.
Thighs and buttocks
Inner thighs often show looseness and crepey texture, while the buttocks can lose shape as muscle is lost. Exilis Ultra 360™ firms the skin and EMSCULPT® rebuilds the gluteal muscles.

Is Non-Surgical Treatment Right for Me?
Non-surgical treatment works best for mild to moderate loose skin in people whose weight has stabilised, or is close to their goal. If you are still losing weight, we may suggest starting with muscle toning and leaving skin tightening until later, so the results last.
It is worth being clear about the limits. Where skin hangs in folds after very large weight loss, often after bariatric surgery, no machine will replace surgical skin removal. If that’s the case, we’ll tell you honestly at consultation rather than sell you a course that won’t deliver.
Treatment also isn’t a way to lose weight. These are skin and muscle treatments, designed for after the weight has come off.
Body treatment consultations are free. Laura or a member of the team will assess your skin, talk through your goals and recommend a plan, whether that’s a single treatment, a combination or our package. You can also see our prices.

Post-Weight Loss Skin FAQs
Yes, for mild to moderate loose skin. Non-surgical skin tightening stimulates new collagen so the skin gradually firms and contracts. Where skin hangs in folds after very large weight loss, surgical skin removal is usually the more effective route, and we will tell you honestly if that’s the case.
Ideally once your weight has stabilised at, or close to, your goal. Starting skin tightening while you are still losing a lot of weight can reduce how long results last. If you are still losing weight, muscle toning is often a good place to start.
Being on a GLP-1 weight loss injection doesn’t usually rule out skin or muscle treatments. We will ask about your medication, health and weight loss so far at your free consultation and advise on the best time to begin.
Yes. Cheek and nasolabial fold fillers replace lost volume, skin boosters such as Profhilo Structura improve skin quality and support, and Exilis Ultra 360 facial skin tightening firms the skin on the face, jawline and neck. Most clients benefit from a combination.
EMSCULPT uses HIFEM energy to produce intense muscle contractions that rebuild muscle tone in areas such as the abdomen, buttocks and arms. It works best alongside regular exercise and enough protein in your diet, and pairs well with skin tightening.
It depends on the area and how much laxity you have. Skin tightening is usually carried out as a course of several sessions spaced a week or two apart, and results continue to develop for up to three months as new collagen forms. Your plan and costs are confirmed at consultation.
Body treatment consultations are free. Our Post-Weight Loss Tightening & Toning Package, which combines Exilis Ultra 360 skin tightening with EMSCULPT muscle toning, is £1,400. Single treatments and courses are listed on our prices page.
