Understanding Your Concern
Why Men Need Different Dosing
Men’s facial muscles are larger and stronger than women’s, and the muscle mass in the forehead and frown complex is significantly greater. Treated with a standard dose, the result is usually underwhelming — movement returns within weeks and the lines come straight back. Male treatment typically requires considerably higher unit counts, and getting that judgement right is the difference between a result that lasts and money wasted.
Placement differs too. Men have a flatter brow that sits lower on the orbital rim, and treating a male forehead with the pattern used on a female one risks lifting the tail of the brow into an arch that looks obviously done. The aim on a man’s face is almost always to soften and flatten rather than lift.
Most men come in for one of three things: a permanent-looking frown line between the brows that makes them look angry in every meeting, horizontal forehead lines that have started holding at rest, or crow’s feet that have deepened noticeably in photographs. The brief is nearly always the same — look less tired and less severe, without anyone being able to point at what changed.
Our Treatment
How the Treatment Works
Anti-wrinkle injections work by temporarily reducing the contraction of the specific muscles that fold the skin. As those muscles relax, the lines they create soften — and because the skin is no longer being creased repeatedly, existing lines have a chance to improve rather than deepen.
Prescription and consultation. This is a prescription-only medicine. UK regulations require a face-to-face consultation with a prescriber before it can be prescribed, and at Serene that consultation is carried out by Nurse Kerry, our Independent Nurse Prescriber (BSc, NMC/INP), who also administers the treatment. Your medical history, current medications and what you want to achieve are all assessed before anything is agreed.
The appointment. Treatment takes around 15 to 20 minutes. A series of small injections is placed into the target muscles using a very fine needle. Most men describe it as a brief sharp scratch rather than pain, and no anaesthetic is needed.
Dosing. The number of units used is decided at consultation based on your muscle strength, the depth of the lines and how much movement you want to keep. Starting conservatively and reviewing at two weeks is often the sensible approach for a first treatment, and a top-up can be added if more softening is wanted.
Downtime & Results
Downtime and Results
There is no real downtime. Small raised bumps at the injection points settle within an hour, and mild redness fades quickly. Occasional bruising is possible, particularly around the eyes. Most men book an appointment and go straight back to work.
For the first four hours, stay upright and avoid rubbing or massaging the treated area. Avoid the gym, saunas, steam rooms and alcohol for 24 hours, and avoid facials or lying face down for the rest of the day.
Results appear gradually. The first changes are usually noticeable from day three to five, with the full effect settled at around two weeks. It is not instant, and judging the result before the fortnight is up is the most common mistake.
Results typically last three to four months. Men often find the first treatment wears off slightly faster because of the stronger muscle activity, with subsequent treatments holding longer as the muscles become conditioned to reduced movement. A review appointment two weeks after your first treatment is included so the result can be assessed and adjusted if needed.
“The aim on a man’s face is softening, not erasing. If you want the frown line gone but still want to raise an eyebrow, say so at consultation — the dose is set around what you actually want, not a standard chart.”
Suitability
Areas We Treat
Suitability is assessed at consultation. Anti-wrinkle injections are not suitable if you are taking certain medications, have particular neuromuscular conditions, or have an active skin infection in the area. Nurse Kerry will go through your medical history in full before prescribing. Commonly treated areas include:
- Frown lines (between the brows)
- Forehead lines
- Crow's feet
- Bunny lines (nose)
- Jaw clenching and teeth grinding
- Neck bands
- Excessive underarm sweating
- Downturned mouth corners

Your Questions Answered
Frequently Asked Questions
Not when dosed correctly. The dose is set around how much movement you want to keep, and for most men that means softening the frown while leaving the brow mobile. A frozen look comes from over-treatment, not from the treatment itself. If you would rather start conservatively and add more at the two-week review, that is a reasonable approach and one we often recommend for a first treatment.
Male facial muscles are larger and stronger, particularly in the forehead and frown complex. A dose calibrated for a female face frequently produces a weak, short-lived result on a man. Your dose is decided at consultation based on your muscle strength and the depth of your lines.
The first changes usually show at day three to five, with the full result settled at around two weeks. Do not judge it before then. A review appointment at the two-week mark is included so the result can be assessed properly.
Typically three to four months. Men often find the first treatment wears off a little faster because of stronger muscle activity, with later treatments lasting longer as the muscles become conditioned to reduced movement.
A brief sharp scratch at each injection point. The needle used is very fine and the whole treatment takes 15 to 20 minutes. No anaesthetic is needed and most men are surprised how straightforward it is.
Not for 24 hours. Avoid the gym, saunas, steam rooms and alcohol for a day, and stay upright for the first four hours without rubbing the treated area. Plan the appointment around a rest day if you train most evenings.
Nurse Kerry, our Independent Nurse Prescriber (BSc, NMC/INP), both prescribes and administers the treatment in clinic. UK regulations require a face-to-face consultation with a prescriber before a prescription-only medicine can be prescribed, and that consultation happens here at the clinic.
Done properly, no — people tend to say you look well rather than identifying what changed. That is the point of the male-specific placement: flattening and softening rather than lifting, so the brow keeps its natural shape.
