What Are Thread Veins?
Thread veins, also known as spider veins or broken capillaries, are small, visible veins that appear close to the surface of the skin, often on the legs or face. They are caused by weakened blood vessels and can be triggered by genetics, hormonal changes, or long periods of standing. Thread veins typically progress through three stages:
- Stage 1: Spider or Reticular Veins
Spider veins are the earliest form of thread veins and appear as thin, web-like red, purple, or blue veins. These are commonly found on the legs or face and are usually superficial. At this stage, thread veins can be treated effectively with sclerotherapy. - Stage 2: Varicose Veins
As thread veins progress, they can develop into varicose veins. Varicose veins are larger, twisted veins that bulge under the skin and are more prominent than spider veins. While some cases of varicose veins can be treated with sclerotherapy, the veins must not be too deep or swollen for this treatment to be effective. - Stage 3: Edema (Swelling)
In the most advanced stages, thread veins can lead to edema, or swelling, caused by poor circulation and fluid buildup in the legs. At this stage, sclerotherapy is not recommended, and alternative treatments may be necessary.
